Jens Lehmann to rejoin Arsenal

According to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Jens Lehmann has agreed to rejoin Arsenal but not signed an official contract yet.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Wenger said:

“Lehmann is training with us and will sign for the rest of the season. We have no cover in the Premier League, so that is why I decided to bring Jens back. He has not signed, but [a contract] has been agreed.”

Arsenal is facing a goal keeper crisis. But, is Lehmann the real deal? Will it do Arsenal any better? Comments below.

TERRY OFFERED PAY RISE - REPORT

John Terry will reportedly be offered a £25,000-a-week pay rise to ward off interest from Manchester City.

The Daily Mirror claims that Chelsea will make Terry the highest-paid player at Stamford Bridge with a £7.7m-a-year offer.

That figure would still see Terry earning around half of the money reportedly offered by Manchester City.

The England captain returns to training this week to meet new boss Carlo Ancelotti for the first time and is expected to be met with a new contract offer.

Chairman Bruce Buck said: "My line as a Chelsea fan, is that I would be devastated if John Terry left Chelsea. Having said that, it's not going to happen. John Terry is synonymous with Chelsea and Chelsea is synonymous with John Terry.

"He has been here since he was a wee tot, he is the captain of Chelsea, he is the captain of England, he is the backbone of our team, he is not leaving."

Liverpool won’t back down

It looks like Xabi Alonso will still be a Liverpool player next season after Real Madrid director general, Jorge Valdano, admitted that the Spanish giants are unwilling to meet the current asking price.

Alonso, 27, has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for several weeks now after it was claimed the player would be interested in a move back to his homeland.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has insisted in recent weeks that Alonso is going nowhere, however it is thought that should a bid of £35 million be made for Alonso, that could well bring to an end Alonso’s time on Merseyside.

Speaking about the possibilty of signing Alonso, Jorge Valdano had this to say : “Xabi Alonso is a priority if he fits into our budget, and this doesn’t seem the case. We are very far from the figures that Liverpool have set out.”

I’m delighted to see that Liverpool are holding firm. It’s about time someone stood up to Real Madrid and said no, you can’t have our player because at the moment is seems as though they are getting anyway they bid for. If you take into account some of the silly transfer fees this summer, I feel Alonso is worth even more than £35 million.

Manchester United’s woeful summer spending continues

First Antonio Valencia, then Michael Owen and now Gabriel Obertan.

Manchester United fans are probably wondering when Sir Alex Ferguson is actually going to start spending some serious cash. In total, the Premier League Champions have only spent around £20 million of the £80 million they recieved from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid last month.

Big names like Karim Benzema, Franck Ribery and Sergio Aguero have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford, however today’s announcement that the club have signed Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan seems to sum up the transfer window for United.

Obertan is a French under-21 international who last season struggled to make it into the Bordeaux first team, forcing former United defender and Bordeuax manager Laurent Blanc to send him on loan to FC Lorient. During his time with Lorient, Obertan scored just once.

At this rate, I find it hard to envisage United winning the Premier League title next season. Let’s be honest, they are signing players who aren’t up to United standards. Even their neighbours Manchester City have done better in the market signing players like Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz. It will be interesting to see who else United can manage to sign between now and the end of August, so stay tuned to Football Corner for all the latest.

Ronaldo introduced to 70,000 strong Bernabeu crowd in a bizarre occasion

I'm sure many of you saw Cristiano Ronaldo being paraded in front of the Real Madrid faithful this evening.

The former Manchester United winger was introduced to the 70,000 strong Santiago Bernabeu crowd for the first time in what was, one of the most bizarre occasions I have ever witnessed.

First of all, Real president, Florentino Perez said a few words about the history of the club and how they were so happy to be welcoming one of the greatest players in the world to Madrid. Then, the man of the moment, Ronaldo jogged out the tunnel in his new ‘Ronaldo 9′ kit smiling like a kid on Christmas morning.

As he strolled onto the stage, Ronaldo shook the hand of Perez, Portuguese legend Eusebio (why, I don’t really know) and Alfredo di Stefano, a true Real Madrid legend. After that, Ronaldo took to the mic.

First, Ronaldo talked about how delighted he was to be joining the club he always dreamed of playing for. He waffeled on for a few minutes before finishing his speech by getting the whole crowd to join him in a pathetic chant. It went a little something like this : una, dos, tres, a la Madrid!

Before leaving the stage Ronaldo was given a ball to do some keepie-uppies with to keep the hundreds of photographers in attendance happy. Unfortunately, Ronaldo could only manage two or three solos at a time, making it difficult for the cameramen to get a decent picture.

Finally, two kids were thrown on the stage. The first kid, who looked about 4, was delighted to get a Real Madrid football signed by Ronaldo, however the second kid, who looked about 12, was less than impressed with the whole occasion. Judging by his face, you’d swear a family pet or something like that had just died. After receiving his ‘Ronaldo 9′ kit off the world’s most expensive player, the kid reluctantly posed for pictures with a face like a bastard rat on him.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Chelsea captain John Terry over the past few days.

Talk of a possible £40 million move to Manchester City has been all over the papers, however Carlo Ancelotti has today claimed that Terry will remain Chelsea’s captain forever (now come on Carlo, forever?).

Arsenal willing to let Fabregas leave for £40 million

It has been claimed today that Arsenal would be willing to let captain Cesc Fabregas leave the club if they recieve a bid of £40 million.

The Spanish international has been linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid for several months now, with Fabregas himself admitting that a move back to his homeland would interest him. A supposed Arsenal insider had this to say to The Sun :

“Nobody at Arsenal wants to see Fabregas go but there comes a point when the money is too good to turn down. If Arsenal receive a bid in the region of £40m there will be an enormous pressure to sell.”

Personally, I would be surprised if Fabregas was playing anywhere other than the Emirates stadium next season. There is no doubt that he is one of, if not the best player currently on the books at Arsenal and I’m sure Arsene Wenger will be doing everything he can to keep him in North London for as long as possible.

Manchester United are five games away from an historic season and veteran winger Ryan Giggs feels Sir Alex Ferguson's side are hitting form at exactly the right time.

With the League Cup and the Club World Cup already won, United can look forward to a Champions League final against Barcelona on May 27 and need seven points from their last four games to secure an 18th English Premier League title.

Sunday's derby with Manchester City will be their 63rd game of the season but after their back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Fulham in March, United have responded with an impressive run of form.

They have won five matches in a row going into the game with Mark Hughes' team at Old Trafford.

While United are on course for more silverware, City's expectations have increased considerably since they were taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group in September and they are continuing to battle for a Europa League place.

Despite being well into the 10th month of their campaign, veteran Giggs thinks United's energy levels are high.

Giggs said: "At this part of the season you want to be involved in big games all the time - and we are.

Ribery to arrive at Old Trafford for £60 million? You must be joking

£60 million for Ribery? Come on. It's never going to happen.

One English newspaper has today reported that Manchester United have today made a massive £60 million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery.

The French playmaker is widely regarded as one of the finest talents in world football and the 26-year old has been strongly linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona in recent weeks and months.

No disrespect to Ribery because I think he is an outstanding player, but do you really think Sir Alex Ferguson would spend £60 million on him? The simple answer to that is no.

Ferguson is not stupid with his money. If it is to be that Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford in the summer to join Real Madrid for, lets say, £68 million, United won't just go out and spend the same amount of money on someone else. They will buy two or three very good players and then work from there.

Even Ribery's biggest fan would have to admit he is only worth £40 million max. There is no denying he is a world class player and I am sure a lot of United fans would love to see him arrive during the summer, however I find it impossible to believe that Ferguson would spend such a large amount on a single player.

Liverpool do Hillsborough victims proud

It was an emotional day at Anfield as Liverpool remembered the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy.

96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death during their side's FA Cup quarter-final clash with Nottingham Forest after police made the decision to allow too many fans into the away section in Hillsborough that day.

As I watched today's service at Anfield, I couldn't help but feel a huge sense of admiration for the people of Liverpool. The two minute silence that marked the occasion was incredible. Not a sound for the 120 seconds.

Despite last night's exit from the Champions League, the Liverpool fans gave Rafa Benitez' men an unbelievable reception as they took their seats for the service. You would excpect nothing less from fans who are undoubtedly among the best in the world.

I am sure the friends and families of those who died in Sheffield 20 years ago will have been delighted with how the day went.

Hamburg hit back to stun City

Hamburg responded to the shock of conceding a goal inside the first minute to beat Manchester City 3-1 in an entertaining UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg clash at the HSH Nordbank Arena.

Martin Jol's impressive side, second in the Bundesliga, created a hatful of chances and were unfortunate not to win the game by a wider margin.

But City, so much better at Eastlands compared with their form away from home this season, still have a chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

Even though Hamburg kicked off, City took the lead after only 36 seconds when Stephen Ireland slotted the ball home after being set up by Robinho.

Hamburg were unfazed though and poured forward creating chance after chance.

Shay Given saved David Jarolim's shot before the unmarked Mladen Petric headed straight at the former Newcastle United goalkeeper when he should really have scored.

In the eighth minute Given was forced to make a superb one-handed stop to keep Michael Gravgaard's close-range effort out but, from the resulting Piotr Trochowski corner, he was finally beaten when Netherlands international Joris Mathijsen headed the ball home.

The game continued at a frenetic pace with the Bundesliga side looking to attack at every opportunity.

Hamburg came within inches of taking a 20th-minute lead when Jonathan Pitroipa's floating header from a tight angle came back off the crossbar with Given beaten.

City were struggling to repel wave after wave of Hamburg attacks and Given once again had to come to their rescue when he pushed away Marcell Jansen's fierce shot midway through the first period.

In a rare City attack Craig Bellamy was denied by Frank Rost after being sent clear by Shaun Wright-Phillips but the ball should have been squared to Ireland who was unmarked and could have side-footed it into an open net.

Just before the break Given was at it again, saving Trochowski's shot with his knees.

The second half was a less open affair although Wright-Phillips tested Rost with a long-range effort just before the hour mark that the Hamburg keeper was equal to.

However, after Wright-Phillips was forced to hack the ball off the line, Hamburg took the lead in the 63rd minute. Micah Richards conceded a penalty when he handled the ball and Trochowski scored from the spot.

With 11 minutes left City were given a mountain to climb when substitute Jose Paolo Guerrero fired Trochowski's cross high into Given's net but, in truth, a two-goal advantage was the least Jol's side deserved for an enterprising display.

Rafa blames Reds mistakes

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez blamed a series of mistakes for their 3-1 Champions League defeat to Chelsea, but still believes his side can keep their European dream alive.

The Reds now require something of a miracle result at Stamford Bridge in next week's quarter-final second leg where they will have to score at least three times.

Liverpool struck first on Wednesday night through Fernando Torres but two goals from Branislav Ivanovic and a third from Didier Drogba put the Blues in control of the tie.

"I was disappointed with the manner of our defeat and the bad mistakes we made at set pieces to allow them two goals," admitted Benitez.

"Now it will be very difficult. We have to score three times at Stamford Bridge, which is a tough call against a very good side.

"For their first goal there were three players near to the scorer and they were not able to stop him. And then something very similar happened for the second, we made bad mistakes at crucial times.

"Now we know we have a difficult task in the second leg. We have to score three times and that will be very difficult.

"But we must believe we can do it. We have scored four at Manchester United so we know what we are capable of.

"Chelsea did not really surprise us and they clearly believe that this is the competition they have most chance of winning now.

"They have won many away games this season but the way we lost was hard to take."

Maybe this will make Robinho start scoring again

Well I certainly hope so.

The Manchester City striker has today been cleared off all charges following allegations of a sexual assault in January. The Brazilian was arrested at the time after some Yorkshire woman accussed him of sexually assaulting her, however he was soon released on bail.

Since the time of his arrest, Robinho hasn't scored a single goal for the club he joined back in September for a British record fee of £32 million. The 25-year old has come in for some strong critiscim for his lack of goals and apparent lack of effort in recent weeks and months. Maybe now that he has been cleared of the allegations he might start performing on the field for Mark Hughes' men.

We will see if Robinho can add to the 12 goals he has already scored for City when they travel to Hamburg for their crucial UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg clash on Thursday.

Adriano Not Certain Of Contract Renewal With Inter

Adriano may have been able to contribute some solid performances and goals for Inter, but the striker admitted he does not know if he will remain with the club past next season.

"My contract with Inter expires in 2010 and I will calmly reflect on whether to renew or not," the Brazilian international explained to Globoesporte.

"I have a good relationship with [Inter coach Jose] Mourinho - I was deployed as a starter in lots of important matches, in the Milan derby and against Manchester United in the Champions League."

Earlier this season the 27-year-old credited the former Chelsea tactician with "saving" his career and further alluded to their respect for one another.

"I am happy because the coach always talks [about his decisions] with me," he concluded.

Adriano has had an inconsistent season, scoring seven times in 22 appearances. Recently, he has fallen behind starlet Mario Balotelli in the pecking order at San Siro.

Ireland deserve a lot of credit for snatching point in Italy

It was a case of better late than never for the Irish national team last night as they claimed a late point in Bari, Italy.

Robbie Keane was the hero on the night as Ireland kept their hopes alive of qualifying in top spot in Group 8 of World Cup qualifying. Marcelo Lippi's Italy took an early lead just minutes after they were reduced to ten men. Giampaolo Pazzini saw red with just two minutes on the clock after he "supposedly" elbowed Manchester United defender John O'Shea.

It was Vincenzo Iaquinta who gave the hosts the lead. Fabio Grosso got on the end of a smart ball played down the line by AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo, and the Lyon man's subsequent cross was met by Iaquinta.

Giovani Trappatoni's men were clearly rattled by the early goal and the Italian manager was forced to make a change just moments after the opener. The unimpressive Andy Keogh was replaced by Hull City striker Caleb Folan.

That move seemed to give the visitors that much needed kick up the backside.

Ireland controlled proceedings there after, without ever really threatening until the final few moments. A long ball hoofed forward by Manchester City keeper Shay Given was met by the head of substitute Folan, who nodded it down to Keane who coolly slotted the ball beyond Gianluigi Buffon to send the travelling fans into hysterics.

All in all, it was a good result for Trap's men. Looking back at it now, the Irish players may feel as though they could of won the game, however a draw was probably a fair result. There is no doubt Ireland's job was made a lot easier when Italy were reduced to ten men but to go a goal behind and still manage to claim a point against the World Champions deserves a lot of credit. Next up for the Boys in green is a trip to Bulgaria.
