2009 brought the deaths of many truly unique characters and influential geniuses I grew up surrounded by. Jim Carroll, Roland S. Howard and the mythical Ron Asheton...just to name a few.

Having only met Roland a couple times, he is yet another great we lost this year who I despise growing old without. enclosed in this post is some of his extraordinary live work with The Birthday Party. Delivering their sonic murder in all of it's live glory. Needless to say, his work with These Immortal Souls, Crime + the City Solution, and Lydia Lunch with "Shotgun Wedding" as well as "Honeymoon In Red". were absolutely crippling as well. To try and give a full description of his entire discography would never be complete, as he brought more than can be explained in words through his music.


Here's to tonight and havin' a drink to bring in the New Year and celebrate their lives.
Only to be drunk on the pope's blood.

Jim Carroll "I Write Your Name"

Jim made 3 albums between 1980 and 83, not to mention his prolific poetry, prose and diaries. "I Write Your Name" was the last of the 3 they recorded as a band. As a character Jim was far more complex and unique, his Christopher Walken-esque presence always lit up the room with stories of the immaculate life, the streets and the beautiful disgrace. He is yet another one we lost this year that I will sorely miss.

Ron Asheton's New Order "Victim Of Circumstance"

For me, Ron Asheton was one of the most important guitar players of all time if not the most important.

In The Stooges short time, he managed to change the world with his guitar and soul power. After the Stooges split in '74, Asheton teamed up with another group of misfits in Detroit. His new fix being the New Order. Enclosed here is their last album "Victim of Circumstance" from 1989. Consists of 8 unreleased rehearsal recordings, and 4 bonus tracks.

Well another New Year is ringing in around the world. And where would we be in this modern world without computer nerds. Well we wouldn't be texting NYE messages on iphones for one thing, or even reading this web page.

Husker Du - Everything Falls Apart

On this date in 1982, Husker Du released their debut studio album, Everything Falls Apart. No singles were released from the album. The Minneapolis, Minnesota band initially gained attention as a hardcore punk band but their music slowed down with time. They disbanded in 1987. The Minneapolis scene also produced The Replacements and The Suburbs, among others.

Lindsay Lohan Dismisses Dating Rumours

Lindsay Lohan has laughed off reports she has a new man in her life - insisting she's just "friends" with her latest rumoured love interest.

The Mean Girls star, who split from her DJ girlfriend Samantha Ronson earlier this year (09), has fought off a string of dating rumours in recent weeks after she was linked to Jason Segel, Entourage star Kevin Connolly, and Gerard Butler.

I'm not dating my friend, people are nutso (sic), and it's not a way to start off the new year with rumours.

She was most recently rumoured to be involved with model Adam Senn, but Lohan is adamant she's still single.

Robert Plant's Womanly Celebration

Robert Plant wants to spend New Year's Eve (31.12.09) in the arms of a woman.

The 61-year-old rocker - who has famously lived a life of sex, drugs and rock n roll excess - admitted he will be looking for love over the holiday season.

He said: "Where would I like to welcome in the New Year? In some warm, tantalising arms."

Although he is looking forward to celebrating New Year's Eve, the former Led Zeppelin singer isn't looking forward to the next decade because all it holds for him is "more attention to bladder control".

The Belle Stars - Sign Of The Times

On this date in 1982, The Belle Stars released their sixth single, "Sign Of The Times". It was backed by "Madness". The A side appeared on their self-titled debut album. The B side was a non-LP track. The single reached the #3 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London all-girl new wave band formed when The Bodysnatchers disbanded. Sarah Jane Owen, Stella Barker, Penny Leyton and Miranda Joyce were The Bodysnatchers who formed the new band. The Belle Stars disbanded in 1986 after one album. They have occasionally reunited to perform.

Roland S. Howard Dies

Roland S. Howard (former Birthday Party guitarist) died wednesday after battling with liver cancer.

First known as the guitarist in Melbourne, Australia's Boys Next Door, the band later transformed it's sound and then renamed to the Birthday Party. One of rocks most incendiary and violent bands to ever grace the stage since the Stooges.

After the Birthday Party broke up in '83, Roland went on to Crime + The City Solution and These Immortal Souls. He also worked with numerous other artists including Lydia Lunch.

Roland's visionary guitar playing will be sorely missed, but the reverberation of every note he played will live on through his music + the music of a million other bands that he influenced.

Code Blue Compilation (Last Rites 003 - 1984)

The way it was.

Old cassette put out by Last Rites fanzine with some of America's hardcore finest: Articles of Faith, Die Kreuzen, Husker Du, Suburban Mutilation, etc... Several bands from the Chicago area, some from the midwest even a few bi-coastal bands. Tracks from the F.U.'S and others are live, while the others are studio. So the sound quality differs quite a bit. Regardless, this is another classic tape put out in 1984 that was a magnificent documentation of the then underground scene.

The Three O'Clock - Baroque Hoedown

On this date in 1982, The Three O'Clock released their debut EP, Baroque Hoedown. It was a five song record that contained "With A Cantaloupe Girlfriend", "I Go Wild", "Marjorie Tells Me", "Sorry" and "As Real As Real". No singles were released from the EP. The band began life as The Salvation Army and released a record under that name but was forced to change their name by the real Salvation Army. The Los Angeles power pop band lasted until 1988. Their Salvation Army debut album was later re-released under the name Befour Three O'Clock and retitled Happen Happened.

Department S - Is Vic There?

On this date in 1980, Department S released their debut single, "Is Vic There?". It was backed by "Solid Gold Easy Action" in the U.K. The single was released in 1981 in the U.S. with a different B side, "Put All The Crosses In The Right Boxes". The single reached the #22 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London new wave band, during its short lived career released three singles and no albums until a 2003 compilation, Sub-Stance, was released. The department was closed in 1981. They released new material in 2007 without, of course, lead singer Vaughan Toulouse who died in 1991 of complications from AIDS.

198 Seconds Of The Dils

On this date in 1977, The Dils released their second single. They called it 198 Seconds Of The Dils. The A side was "Class War". The B side was "Mr. Big". The Carlsbad, California punk band was led by brothers Tony and Chip Kinman and a number of different drummers. They were extremely influential on the Los Angeles punk scene. While neither song appeared on an album by their breakup in 1980, the songs have appeared on a couple of Dils compilations since then. Brothers Chip and Tony Kinman went on to form cowpunk band Rank & File.

Rihanna asked to dress conservatively for New Year bash

Singer Rihanna is upset as she won't be able to do her usual raunchy stage show in Abu Dhabi on New Year's Eve because the organisers have told her to dress "conservatively".

Lindsay Lohan has a new boyfriend
